Nursery Bedding And Newborn Precautions

So you’ve bought the crib - congratulations! But now you must be wondering what bedding you’re going to put in it. A large number of baby bedding sets consist of several items, but some of them may actually be harmful to your baby. To be honest, the only thing you really need is a couple of crib sheets, because modern crib safety standards recommend keeping cribs free of all soft bedding. Leaks will happen, of course, so buy a few extra crib sheets. It’s better to spend your money on a few really good, durable, and comfortable crib sheets than on accessories you don’t even need.

It may come as a surprise to some, but neither crib bumpers nor blankets are recommended because they are a suffocation hazard. Swaddling blankets or sleep sacks are the best alternative to loose blankets and quilts. Sleep sacks have become a commonplace item these days. While a bit difficult to explain to someone who’s never seen one before, a photograph will clear things up instantly. If you interested in a swaddling blanket, you might want to investigate some of the more modern styles that aid in getting the right fit. Swaddling can be an excellent way to help a newborn sleep, but it is generally not recommended beyond 6 weeks because of fears it can hinder hip development. If you rock your baby a lot, you might still want a quilt or blanket to wrap around him or her. However, when baby goes in the crib, be sure to take the blanket off.

Some people choose to use a sleep wedge, which is designed to keep babies off their tummies (believed to increase the risk of SIDS). However, since a newborn that is put to sleep on her back can’t roll over, she will remain on her back for the whole night. Since foam is a soft material, these wedges could do more harm than good, by contributing to suffocation risks.

Some of the less obvious items you can find in a bedding set are wall decor, a crib skirt, and a window valance. If you’re on a strict budget, skip these. There are mostly decorative and really won’t be missed.

But most parents are going to want a bedding set anyway, just for the look of the nursery. In this case, try gender neutral crib bedding like Hot Cocoa baby bedding. It’s much more cost effective because you can use it again and again, regardless of the sex of your next baby.
