Making Baby’s Homecoming Tension Free
You have had your baby. Now the real fun begins! Bringing your baby home from the hospital is a big event. Your life will never be the same again. Hopefully, you have prepared for the baby’s arrival during your pregnancy. Now is the big day. What kinds of things can you do to make your transition go more smoothly?
Sleep when the baby sleeps. This is the biggest piece of advice new parents need to put into practice. Your baby will sleep a lot in the beginning. You should take advantage of this and sleep, too. Your internal time clock may get disrupted, but this is part of having a new baby. Everything gets disrupted! To care for your baby properly, you need to feel as rested as possible.
If you cannot stand a slightly messy house, you have two choices. You can either hire a housekeeper or get used to things not being perfectly cleaned like they were before baby. It is extremely tempting to try and do all of your chores when the baby is asleep. If you find yourself doing this, please remember that you need to sleep as much as you can. Your main purpose in life at this moment is to care for your newborn.
Your newborn will go through so many diapers you might consider buying stock in the diaper company! Whether you are using disposable diapers or a cloth diaper service, you must have these pre-purchased and in the house when your baby comes home. You will definitely be using them shortly after baby’s arrival.
If you are nursing, your milk may not have come in enough to completely feed the baby the first two or three days. Your baby will still be hungry. Having a little formula on hand will save you and your baby from being frustrated at her not being able to get enough to eat. (Do nurse her each time she is hungry, but supplement with a little formula until your milk is established.)
During the night, in order to increase the amount of sleep you get, it is easy to bring the baby into your bed to nurse. Some families with sleep with the baby in the parents’ bed, others are not comfortable with this. If this is the case for you, purchasing a small crib or basinette and letting the baby sleep right next to you will make night nursing easier. Just reach over and bring the baby into your bed. When you are finished, put the baby back in his basinette.
Safety is a concern for a new parent. A dect baby monitor will allow parents to hear what the baby is doing in her room. You can listen to the baby sleeping and easily hear her when she cries. Safety in the water is also a huge concern. Buying a baby bath makes certain that the baby is safe in while you are giving her a bath. It also saves your back from the strain of bending over the big bathtub. Never leave your baby unattended when you bathe her… Even if you are using a small bathtub.
Lastly, take time to enjoy your new baby. Play with him, read to him and devote your attention to him. It will not be very long before baby is a grown man.
